Lorraine A. Stastny. Veteran Chicago public school teacher Lorraine Ann Stastny died Monday at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill., at age 90.
Stastny taught in Chicago school for 38 years, from 1956 to 1994. She won multiple Teacher of the Year awards over the years, including one from the Archer Road Kiwanis Club in 1972.
Then teaching at Nathan S. Davis Elementary School at 39th Place and Sacramento Avenue, her principal at the time hailed Stastny as versatile, competent and efficient, and inclined to take initiative. She was also recognized for her rapport with students.
She also won Teacher of the Year awards from the service club Lions Club International and an organization for Catholics who teach in public schools, the Aquin Guild.
Stastny, a longtime resident of Chicago’s Clearing community, was born June 11, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Chicago natives George “Jack” and Anna (Walsh) Stastny. Her sole sibling, George Stastny Jr., was born in New York in 1927. A representative for the 26th District in the 70th, 71st, 72nd and 73rd Illinois General Assemblies, he died in 1977. Her mother died in 1967 and her father in 1992.
A longtime member of St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, Stastny attended mostly Catholic schools. They included two elementary schools in Philadelphia and three in Chicago. She completed high school at Academy of Our Lady in 1952, after three years at Lourdes High School.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Chicago Teachers College in 1956 and completed a year of additional education at Loyola University, 1977-78.
She taught grades two through eight at Davis Elementary, 1957-94.
Stastny was a lifetime member of the National Parent Teacher Association, Retired Teachers Association of Chicago and Chicago Teachers College Alumni Association. In retirement, she was a regular volunteer for the Chicago Cultural Center. In 2020, she was recognized as a 50-year-member of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Society for Key Women Educators.
She is survived and fondly remembered by a host of cousins and their families.
