Frederick Franklin Sears, Sr., Veteran US Air Force, Korea. Devoted husband, father, grandfather, and longtime teacher in Chicago Public Schools, died peacefully in his sleep on January 30th at the age of 93.
Born and raised in Kenwood, Frederick attended Kenwood Academy and Tilden Technical High School and later earned degrees from Illinois Normal and DePaul University. With his two brothers and father, he joined the Illinois Air National Guard out of high school and deployed to Europe during the Korean War.
Frederick taught for 27 years at Gage Park High School, Kelly HS, and Dunbar HS. From 1982-1992 he was the principal of Wendell Smith Elementary in the Pullman neighborhood. He was proud to be a teacher and have the chance to influence the lives of thousands of students over his career. He always enjoyed seeing former students and hearing how they had grown and what they had achieved.
His wife and dearest companion of 63 years, Eleanor, preceded him to the next life last August. They leave behind their six children: Frederick Jr., Margaret (retired Captain, Chicago Police Dept), David (Sharee), Bronwyn, Allison (Greg), and Matthew (Cyndi), and seven grandchildren: Alandra, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Matthew Jr., Michael, Nathan, and Tessa.
